Terms used in home dental care
Home dental glossary
Plain-language definitions for terms you may see when arranging dental care at home in Malaysia.
Domiciliary dental care
Dental assessment or selected care delivered where a person lives, including a private home or care facility. Suitability depends on the person, procedure, equipment, environment and referral plan.
Dental assessment
A structured review of the concern, mouth, teeth, gums, relevant health history and care goals. It produces findings and a next-step plan; it is not the same as confirming every requested procedure in advance.
Practising certificate
Current practising evidence used with professional registration to verify that a dentist may practise. Families can compare the registered name and current details through the Malaysian Dental Council before a visit.
Informed consent
A decision made after the person receives understandable information about the proposed care, benefits, material risks, alternatives, fees and the option to decline. Capacity and lawful decision-making arrangements must be considered.
Clinical referral
A documented handover to another dentist, specialist, clinic or hospital when that setting can provide the required assessment, equipment, procedure or medical support. A useful referral names the reason and next responsible party.
Urgent dental care
Prompt assessment for dental or mouth problems that should not wait for routine scheduling. Trouble breathing, severe spreading facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, major trauma or rapid deterioration requires urgent medical care or 999.
Portable dental equipment
Equipment designed to be transported for assessment or selected care outside a fixed clinic. Its availability does not make every procedure suitable at home; power, water, lighting, positioning, infection control and referral access still matter.
Care setting
The place where assessment or treatment happens: home, dental clinic, specialist centre or hospital. The suitable setting follows the person’s health, the required procedure, available equipment and the support needed if plans change.
Thinking about a home visit?
Whenever you are ready, you can share the area and the main concern. A provider can then advise whether a home visit is suitable, who would attend and what happens next.
